The Structure

How the story mode is built

Twenty matches, about twelve and a half hours, in four acts. Here is the shape of it, with no spoilers in it at all.

No spoilers on this page. No results, no scorelines, no character beats, no ending. Structure only.

How long it is

20 playable matches, about twelve and a half hours for one route, across four acts.

That works out at a bit over 37 minutes a match. A match in this game is nowhere near 37 minutes. Everything else is cutscene, dialogue and loading.

Act 1 on the episode select: 3 matches, 6 side scenarios, 4 link scenarios. 19 entries, about 3 hours 45 minutes of story and play on Easy, including every side and link entry.

Thirteen of the twenty matches happen before the World Youth Championship even starts.

The World Youth format

Stated in-game: 24 teams in six groups, top two advance; the twelve survivors are redrawn into groups of three; four group winners reach the semi-finals, then the final.

Which is how seven matches gets you from a group stage to a trophy.

Does the bracket change between runs?

The only full public playthrough of this game plays the endgame three separate times, with three completely different sets of opponents and not one repeated knockout opponent between them. Nothing on screen explains why.

There are two explanations and I cannot yet rule either out. Either the World Youth draw varies between playthroughs, or those three runs are simply the game’s three story routes — New Stars, Legendary and Advanced — which would give three different brackets without the draw varying at all.

I will update this line when I can settle it from my own save.

The three routes

Three separate modes, three separate completion trophies.

  • New Stars Route — The mode this site is built around. Your created player, the World Youth arc.
  • Legendary Route — Its own mode, with its own completion trophy.
  • Advanced Route — Its own mode, with its own completion trophy.

Some coverage writes the last two as one mode. They are two.

The one match you are meant to lose

There is exactly one scripted defeat in the twenty: the friendly at the top of act three, against Stuttgart Youth. Everything else is winnable and losable.

Trophies and difficulty

34 trophies — 18 bronze, 10 silver, 5 gold, 1 platinum.

What isn’t in the twenty

The story is built from three episode types.

  • Main episodes — The matches. These are the twenty.
  • Side scenarios — Story only, no match.
  • Link scenarios — Character conversations. Where the created player’s moves and Potentials come from, all of them listed in the move index.

Act one alone is three matches, and it opens 6 side scenarios and 4 link scenarios. The link scenarios are where the created player’s moves and Potentials come from, so the twelve and a half hours measures the main line only.

Worked out by running the only full public playthrough through text recognition end to end, then checking it against my own save. The walkthrough is cited as data and never shown.
